The series, ‘Syracuse-upon-Wye’ comes from sketches made in 2017 made in the sunshine from a balcony in Sicily. I drew the jagged line of coastal defences in the sea at Syracuse. Their appearance contrasts with the elegant city that they were intended to protect. The subsequent drawings were made from my boat on the river throughout the winter of 2018-19. The mud and cold water of the Wye has seeped into the fabric of memory, clouding the luminous tints of the Sicilian summer while refining the jagged line of defences that nature has failed to modify.
