‘Farm on a Flood Plane’. Abbey Farm, Tintern, reflected in flooded fields next to the river Wye. Drawings (four images).
‘Farm on a Flood Plane: Tintern’
I developed these three drawings from sketches made before the pandemic in the flooded field behind Tintern Abbey. Neither my studio nor the old monastery was available to me during Covid and in order to make these drawings, I borrowed the music room of a late friend who had died a few years previously. And so, in this room, filled with the ephemera of his professional life, memories flowed between my associations with him and my recollections of the doomed monastery. The farmhouse, in front of the abbey appears weirdly intact, solid and monumental before the disintegrating building. These factors, as well as the sombre anxieties of the time, insinuated themselves into the disconnections between the upper drawing and its reflected lower half.
