‘Rosenkavalier’
I attended the 2017 production of ‘Rosenkavalier’ at Welsh National Opera. I sat at eye-level with the stage and worked with my drawing book on my knees. The action appears in the top section while the audience and orchestra appear below. This separation of stage and audience was usefully divided in the gutter between the pages of my book although working in darkness, I could not be sure of this demarcation. I attended three performances and drew continuously throughout, tracing with three pencils the ins and outs of the narrative. Because of the audience around me, I worked quietly, no sudden changes, only the spooling of three pencils in an unexpectedly voluptuous dialogue with the action on stage.
